Surprisingly not much is actually known about the world's largest fish. Whale sharks have recently become protected in Honduras and Utila is on their main migratory path. A scuba diving vacation with Deep Blue Utila will provide you with the opportunity of seeing and even snorkelling with these awesome creatures. Our Utila Whale Shark Research Project over the next five years will provide new information to add to the slowly growing knowledge base.  Photographs taken of the Utila whale sharks are being added to ECOCEAN, an international whale shark database. In 2007 a whale shark was tracked through three different countries, this is the first time this has happened anywhere in the world.

Scuba diving on Utila is rich and varied with more than 130 buoyed sites around the island. The North side of Utila has the second largest barrier reef in the world with awe inspiring sheer walls dropping to over 1,000 meters. The South side of Utila consists mainly of shallow fringing reefs, the top of the reef at around 5 meters dropping down to between 30 & 40 meters. Then of course during the surface intervals the whale shark search is on. Scuba diving heaven!!

We have had an amazing Christmas and New Year period here on Utila, with sightings of Pilot Whales, Orcas and many more Whale Sharks than normal, it really has been a fantastic period. As of today we now have 73 Whale Sharks in the Ecocean database, this is a great achievement which we are very proud of and we would like to think that during the next few months we will add a lot more.

April in 2009 has been a great month for Whale Sharks, Utila has become the only place in the world where Whale Sharks have been seen every month for the last 16 months.
